temperature problem

have an audi a6 Quattro 2.8 it can be shut off for a half a day and just by have the ignition in on position not cranking engine the temperature gage just go up to half way.is that temperature sensor related? and how many temp. sensors there is on this car.

There is one sender for the gauge and a sensor for the coolant temp for engine management, you may have a faulty temp sender for the gauge.
