Engine overheats?

Temperature gauge says hot, but digital panel says coolant temperature is normal, but car temperatures go up and down while driving and I just replaced the thermostat.

Good morning,

Did the car overheat before all this started?

Does the gauge go up and down or the digital display reading go up and down?
