Sounds bad when running and gets louder as you accelerate

Well a few weeks ago my future father in-law's car started sounding real loud when started. We pinpointed a hole or maybe a tube on the motor on top at the back where hot air was being released, it drives fine, not running hot but the air blowing noise gets louder as you press on the gas pedal. If you take it out of gear and in to neutral the sound is hardly heard at all. But while driving there are smells of fumes but not too overwhelming. We pretty much know it's a vacuum hose but can't figure out which vacuum or if it's a vacuum hose missing and where the hole connects to. Does anyone have an idea of what it is?

Hi,

What you described sounds like one of the exhaust manifolds is leaking exhaust fumes. A vacuum leak wouldn't cause air to blow out. It would suck air in. Is it possible for you to take a pic of the item you are referring to and record the sound so I can hear it?

I attached a pic of an exhaust manifold. Does it look like what you are referring to?

Let me know. Also, if you can take the pic and record the sound, it will be helpful.

The pic you sent doesn't look like where i seen, once i get another chance to get a look at the motor i'll take a pic and try to record the sound and send it to you. Should be in the next day or two, but thanks for the response and hopefully you'll be able to help.

Hi,

It sounds like a plan. There is one other thing I attached that could be what you see. It is the egr. There is a steel pipe that runs from it. See the pic. If that is correct, let me know. If it isn't, I'll wait until you get me the pics.
