Had timing belt replaced but it was returned with engine noise. Advised by other mechanic it was tappet noise. What damage could happen from driving van with damaged tappets?

a failed lash adjuster will eventual cause the vale to not open fully or even apply side pressure and wear out a valve guide, i find it hard to understand how a lash adjuster has failed after a timing belt replacement, it could be a coincidence, as the lash adjusters are not touched when replacing a timing belt, i would go get a second opinion on the noise first.
