Hi, just got a 99 sunfire and once in awhile the tachometer will blink and flash’s the trip word. It goes back and forth between the mileage and then the trip miles. I’ve pushed the button in to try and reset the trip miles but that doesn’t seem to work. It doesn’t do this all the time. Thanks

Hi,

Because of the model year, I have very little diagnostics available. However, from experience, it sounds like the instrument cluster itself needs to be replaced. The trip odometer and odometer are all part of a printed circuit board (PCB). If I had to guess, one of the solder joints on the PCB.

They can fail just from age, heat, and so on. In your case, it sounds like the joint is usually tight enough to make contact but fails on and off.

Let me know your thoughts and or questions.

Take care,

Joe
