In cold weather I let the car reach normal operating temp. Siiting in driveway. I then get on the highway and the temp. Gauge drops all the way down below the cold mark. If I get off the highway and come to a stop, the temp slowly reaches normal again. I've replaced the thermostat 3 times with no luck solving the matter. Any ideas?

What is wrong is everyone puts in the wrong stat.
I will assume the heater stay cold, you didnt say and that is the crucial issue.
If heater is ok, the temp sender is bad if not.
This.
On this generation there are 2 types.
Paper gasket stat and special rubber ring stat.

Yours (ours, I have 96) is the rubber ring and must not have a paper gasket.

See s.N.A.F.U. Topic.
