1996 Suzuki Esteem 90000 miles

Start up car, drive a block. gauge shows hot.
Check on raidator--water is not hot or over heated.
What could be the problem? Thanks

if coolant temperature gauge is inaccurate than most likely culprit is faulty coolant temperature sending unit, located on top left front of engine.
