Suspension coils, the ride is pretty hard

The car is low but I noticed that the springs in the car are tied with a wire. The previous owner did everything by himself. So is there a reason they should be tied or did he just want a hard sporty feel. Basically I am asking if I can remove those ties.

Hi and thank you for visiting 2CarPros.

If he has wire wrapped around the coils from the top coil to the bottom coil and the wire is under considerable tension then it sounds like an attempt at a $5.00 suspension drop kit. In which case you may cut the wire but be aware the wire will have a lot of tension on it. When you cut it stay very clear so when it releases it does not injure you.

If it looks like the wire may be holding the springs in for some reason I suggest you gave a shop look at it and make sure you don't have a spring perch issue where the springs can dislodge and fall out of the perch.
I hope this was helpful. Please let me know what you end up doing.

Thanks, Rich

Sorry, I should have specified that its just tied on the bottom part of the coil, the very bottom circle and one above it and its the same on all the 4 tires. I know it would be the best to change them but I am not able to atm. I am just looking for a way to make the ride more comfortable cause now it is hard as heck.

Is the wire on the coils only or does it go down through to the spring perches like its holding the spring in the perch?

Coil only it looked like a very bad attempt at making them stiffer. Sorry for no picture.

Okay, I just wanted to make sure he didn't put shorter springs in to drop it and stiffen the ride and used wire to keep them from falling out of the perch when the suspension dropped. It sounds like you are safe to cut the wire heeding the warning of danger. I would however jack the car under the frame until the tire is off the ground and yank on a front and a rear spring to make sure they are secure in the perch.

Thanks for asking us, let me know if you have any issues.

Rich
