My timing belt broke while driving. I'm willing to put the money into the car if it is just the timing belt. Can and should you you check the valves before putting the engine back together or do you need to get the engine running. I want to avoid additional cost.

Cannot check engine compression without T-Belt on ie. short of belt or pull heads no way to tell.Although Subaru does not state interference engine experience proves it does bend valves
