2005 Subaru Outback service

It's on the driver's side behind the axle. Here is a picture of it.

Thanks for responding back. FYI, on some Subarus, they put a a round metal cover held in place by on bolt instead of installing the filter. The dealership cannot tell me why they did this. It makes little sense to me. The filter might help increase the life of the transmission and since the design is already complete, leaving it off makes no sense. I may take the cover off some day to see what is behind it. Maybe there is a kit that can used to install a filter. Then again, this is a car that does not have a fuel filter and the cabin air filter is a $120 option, which my car did not have. So some wierd Subaru ideas I gues. Thanks again, Ted

I have never seen one like that. All the ones I have worked on have had the filter. Is the a filter in the trans pan that is replaceable?

According to the parts counter guy at Mark Miller Subaru in SLC, the only filter in the pan is a screen which can be cleaned if the pan is dropped. His computer diagrams do not list or show any kind of filter inside of the transmission except for the screen. There is a picture on one of the diagrams of the metal cap that might be in place of the filter. The parts guy said that unless you pay for the power flush, all they do is drain the fluid throuh the drain plug and install a new filter. He implied that the pan is not normally dropped for this service.

I still want more answers and plan to do more research through Subaru, possibly talking to the service writer at the dealership. Please feel free to share anyting else you might find out about this situation. Thanks again, Ted Zalkind

I would think if there is a screen in the trans, it should be cleaned. It would be acting like a filter. That is my opinion.
