my longtime mechanic says engine noise is sign of internal damage, rod, bearing, etc. Subaru service says the same thing. Should I go with a quality rebuit engine replacement - about $5k - or buy a n new car. All in all car looks ok, tranny seems fine.

I'm also curious. I never got any idiot light or other trouble indicator, and car still runs ok. What's that about, will it just blow like its in Turn Two at Daytona?
