transmission going in and out of od 1999 outback

I just got a used 1999 subaru outback with 116000 miles. when i am going around 30 or more and when i put on the brakes a little the transmission shifts down and when i get back up to speed it does not go into high. i shift from drive to neutral and then back into drive then the car goes into drive

If it does not shift right and you just got the car check the condition of the transmission fluid. check if the transmission fluid has a burnt smell. If it does then you should replace the fluid and filter.
