Subaru Legacy 2002 Temp Gauge

Temperature gauge ran 1/4 notch higher than usual both idling and driving. Checked hoses to radiator next morning when car was cool - hoses compressed top and bottom. Took off radiator cap it had mustard looking residue. What is the issue?
