1998 subaru legacy/outback wagon 140,000 miles 4 cylinder. Last night I was driving down the road and lost my power steering, when it happened my brake indicator lamp and battery indicator lamp came on. I checked the power steering fluid and I wasnt low enough to cause a loss of power steering. A friend told me it may be a broken belt but I havent been able to locate one if that is the problem. Please help.

The belt sounds like the cause. It is located on the front of the engine just behind the cooling fans. On the hood should be a diagram of how it goes. You have to loosen up the altinator bolts and the adjusting bolt. Make sure the belt is in place. Then tighten the bolt on the top of the altinator that tightenes the belt. Do not over tighten. Then tighten the bolts for the altintor and adjuster.
Not hard to do, I have a 1999 outback.
