Idles extrememly high at intervals

86 subaru GL hatchback 82,000 original miles

idle rpm jumps to 5k -7k at intermittent intervals,
sounds rough, then back to normal.

If I were you; i'd run 2 lots of subaru upper engine cleaner thorogh the car if this doesn't solve the problem then i'd be highly suspioous of the air flow meter or a vacuum leak somewhere
