I have a 1999 Subaru Forester, 65K m.
The light on the AC button is out, though the AC seems to work OK. All other dash and button lights work OK.
I asked the Subie service manager and got the expected "never saw that before.."
Is it possible to replace w/o tearing down the whole dash? Is there something that could be amiss w the AC?

Most likely the led in the switch is burnt out.We have seen it a lot in our shop. The reason the dealer states thats a new one to them is they dont work on to many cars that are out of warranty.I havent had any success trying to find a replacement led and when i give a customer the price to replace the switch they usually live with the light being out.
