I have a well-cared for 1998 Subaru Outback Legacy with about 95,000 miles. It is a standard, and receives regular maintenance.

Today, for no apparent reason and with no warning, the dreaded 'check engine' light appeared while driving. It has never appeared before.

It appeared again when I started the car up after sitting all day.

Any ideas what could trigger this light for the first time?

Thanks
