1992 Other Subaru Models motor cuts out

motor seems to cut out when ever it feels like it? just out of the blue it will cough sputter and then stop, sometimes it idles very rough and then cuts out and other times it will just die?
i thought it might be the coil because i heard a clicking sound comming from that area, however the engine wasn't that hot so the coil wouldn't have been to hot, i also thought of the air flow sensor?
anyway it's driving me crazy!!

Hi there,

Very hard problem to locate this, you need it in the failed state to inspect. But i would have the fuel pressure tested, and check the fuel filter for contaminants, replace it and cut the old one open, have a god look at all the muck in side, The way you describe it failing sounds fuel to me, if ignition problem, it would just die, but the rough idle tens to lean me towards a fuel issue.
