I have an 1987 Subaru GL Wagon. It needs a new catalytic converter which is currently on order. the car is also overheating occasionally and seems really underpowered. Sometimes it is hard to get it over 35 mph when beginning acceleration. The thermostat is not that old. Do you think replacing the catalytic converter will help with the overheating and general sluggishness of the engine?

a bad convertor will cause the lack of power and sluggishness you described.

not sure that it is the 100% cause of the overheating but it is possible, as the engine is running efficently.

another thing is the engine is running rich or lean causing hte lack of power, overheating and the convertor to burn out.
