My 1980 Subaru 1600 manual transmission is giving me startng problems.

When you turn the key to "ON" the dash lights light up and when you turn the key to start, it most of the time does "NOTHING". It is almost like a "Neutral Safety Switch" is malfuntioning. However I have researched this switch on-line and all I have found is that this switch is only installed in Automatic Transmissions.

Then I thought is may be a Balist Resistor but it does not start then die when you let go of the key, it just does not do anything. No clicking like a solinoid problem, no turn over at all.

I have to turn the key on and off several time then it might catch and start.

Since it is manual, I have to POP the clutch to start it if it takes too long to work using the key.

What do you think it is? I hope it is not the ignition switch itself. My manual tells me to go to a mechanic to change an ignition switch.

Please help!!

Thanks, Theresa
