The service schedule for my 2005 Legacy GT Limited (2.5 turbo) calls for inspection of the timing belt at 30,000 miles. I've had several cars with timing belts and none have ever called for an inspection. With all the cars I'm familiar with, you have to remove the timing belt cover which is usually behind a bunch of other stuff that has to be removed. If you go through that hassle, you might as well replace the belt while you're in there. What is involved in inspecting the timing belt on this engine?

Is this an interference type engine?

Frankly, I wouldn't worry about it. The owner's manual says it's not due for a change until 105,000 miles. It's not an interference motor. If it helps, I have almost 80,000 miles on my '05 Legacy GT LTD (2.5 turbo)...On the original belt.
