In addition to the red positive and black negative cables, there is a third cable. I suppose it is a ground? Where does it connect?

Well on some they have four cables. The big red one is positive, a smaller red one is power to the fuse box undert the hood.. Then you have two wire on the negative side. the big black with yellow stripe one goes to the engine block {engine ground} then you have a smaller black with a yellow stripe that goes to the body and is the body ground.
