1996 Subaru Legacy oil in overflow res.

i changed the thermostat and all is working well so far but while draining the radiator i noticed a bit of oil in the water. the overflow was also contained a bit of oil. no indication of water in the oil pan. what is causing this?

check tranny fluid
if low and or foamey
radiator no good
if all ok
just drive it for a few miles and check again
