1995 Subaru Legacy AWD Problems

My car seems to have shut off the awd function and is now running on fwd. It is running fine, but why would the awd drive stop working, and how do I get it to work again?

I had the same thing happen on my 1993 Legacy. I didn't realize I didn't have the AWD until it snowed and believe me, as a front wheel drive, this little wagon wasn't so great. I had to have the solenoid in the rear end which causes the AWD to work replaced. It was a $105 dealership item. But it means taking the transmission apart to put it in. But I am not an expert. Just the same condition - so I offer my input. Good luck! :)
