I am having trouble "sliding off" the crankshaft sprocket from the crankshaft. I've tried using heat and cranking on it. Is there a special puller I should use, or any other technique to try?

Thanks for the help.

Heat is not a good idea, don't go there again. If there are two threaded holes in the face of the gear, you can use a steering wheel puller, if not you will have to locate a suitable puller that fits behind the gear with out causing any damage to the case, if the gear has been heated toss it away, also be aware that the gear will now be tighter as it has shrunk a fraction due to the heat applied.
