1991 Subaru Legacy head gasket

my girlfriends subaru legacy has a bad head gasket that leaks water out the side of the engine. my question is do i have to pull the whole motor to replace the head gasket or can i just pull the head off the side and replace the gasket? also, is there any other parts that need to be replaced at the same time?

Pull the head and replace the timing belt while your there.
