my impreza is due for 50,000 k service. The car is running very well. The subaru dealer says that the water pump should be replaced at 50,000k even though the manual does not. I assume he is drumming up business to suit himself. Am I being over cynical?

Hi keith rate,

Water pump is a wear and tear item which does not have a replacement schedule.

During timing belt changes, it would be advisable to replace it since all the surrounding parts are already taken off.

This is to protect both you and the dealer themselves because the water pump is known to give way not long after timing belt replacement.

If you are not doing anything to the timing belt( I guess this is timing belt driven?) Don't worry about the water pump, it can last longer than that if coolant or anti freeze is used in the system.
