smell was not like exhaust fumes, it had a burning smell, like plastic burning. I have a power steering leak and it gets on the engine but would fumes come out the tailpipe? I opened the hood and saw no smoke there.

Could be (hydrogen sulfide) burning too rich due to an engine management system that is not going into closed loop (check the coolant and oxygen sensors, or for a thermostat stick in the open position), plugged PCV valve, or excessive fuel pressure (bad fuel regulator). High CO levels in the exhaust can also be caused by an inoperative air pump system.

The leak on the power steering has nothing to do with it-
