1996 Subaru Impreza howing when decelerating

I am looking to buy this car and when while test driveing it, acceleration sounds fine but deceleration would howl bad in drive less in 3rd less in 2nd, i noticed that the drivers side rear strut is broken, would that cause the howling or would it be a tranny going out?

no it did not howl in neutal or while accelerating

Then it is a bearing in trans possible roller on direct drive clutch
