When I shift into Reverse, particularly when engine is cold, it seems to "drop" into gear with a clunk. This does not occur when shifting into Drive. It is less noticable but still occurs when engine is warm or rpm are low. Is this indicative of impending problems? If so, would repair at this time stave off more costly ones?

That is very normal for a car, its signs of aging. The transmission is a hydrolic system using liquid presssure (tranny fluid). Simply flush your transmission fluid and fill with new, along with, changing your tranny fluid filter and pan gasket. (All very normal repairs for an aging car)
