My Forester (120k, 2.5L, non-turbo) has started to leak radiator fluid and steam/smoke occasionally from underneath the hood. The radiator overflow stays pretty full but adding water to the radiator itself keeps the engine from overheating. The mechanic told me today that the head gasket is leaking and would cost $2200 to fix (around 20h of labor plus machinist to do something with the heads). Sure seems like a lot! Do that sound right? Is it worth it?

2200 is high. no way would it be 20 hours of labor.

10 hours tops... i wouldnt go over 1200 even with the machine shop fee for maching the heads.
