We believe the power steering pump, or rack on our car is going, however today I started to notice a strange occasional grinding sound. It at first appeared to be coming from inside the engine or engine compartment, however after standing outside the car it more appears to be coming from behind the engine bay and directly underneath the car. The car is not driving differently, however I am concerned by the noise.

Is the noise constant with engine speed? Will it change with the car in park, drive or neutral?

Does the sound change if you move the steering wheel L/R? Louder? Different pitch?
Fluid full?

Fluid is full, and the noise only briefly occurs when the car is going from low rpms to high rpms then stops. And yes there is also a noise when turning the steering wheel sometimes

Sounds like the pump itself. When you rev the engine it takes a couple seconds for the pump to build pressure. Same thing when you steer L/R.
