Steering wheel shaft loose?

I’m trying to figure out why the shaft connected to the steering wheel is very loose. I tried to tighten the 2 small torx bolts but they stripped. I checked the shaft below that and it seems fine.

Do you mean the intermediate shaft the has a bolt on top and one at the bottom? Or the upper shaft in the tilt column? Where are they loose? Don't recall any torx bolts that are not inside the column.

I think I figured it out, I checked the cap that covers the bearings that shaft sticks through was bent I’m going to get one from junkyard see how that’s does.

Bent isn't good, that usually happens if the tilt gets loose and people use the wheel as a handle to get in.

No rush, life goes on and getting parts these days is becoming a difficult thing. In this case I'd probably grab a complete column and go through it and just swap the column in.

Turn the steering so that the front is straight. Now go under the column and you will see a hole in the plastic, there is an alignment pin they sell but I use a piece of steel rod and run tape around the column to hold it. That prevents damage to the Clock Spring and keeps the wheel centered. Now remove the panel under the dash to get to the column. Remove the body module and set it aside, disconnect the shift cable from the shift rail. Then unplug the harness from the column. Now remove the deflector cover that is over the column. Then the pinch bolt at the top of the steering shaft (I'd also remove the lower bolt after checking if the shaft rattles, if it doesn't you might want the lower shaft as well) Now remove the two nuts from the flange and the two that hold it to the slide blocks and you have the column out. Reverse the process to install it, but tighten the 4 nuts to 22 ft lbs, they are part of how the column collapses. Sometimes you need to use a scan tool to reset the steering sensor, other times you don't.
