Steering noise

Hi, I have a situation where after driving a few kilometers I get an intermittent knocking sound. This is not apparent when I first start the car up and the engine is cold. But when I return from an excursion and the car is stopped in the driveway and I turn the steering wheel to left or right I get a noise. The steering wheel is not loose in anyway, but I am concerned that the overall level of knocking sound is increasing. As the car is 12 years old with low mileage and in good condition, I would prefer to keep it but not if the repairs are going to cost a great deal. Are you able to pinpoint what the problem may be, availability of parts and if it is worthwhile repairing? I appreciate any assistance you can give.

Good morning,

When it makes the noise if you are stopped and you turn the wheel, does it make the noise without the car moving?

There are bushings for the steering rack assembly that do wear out. The tie rod ends are another common wear item, but we need to narrow down the area of the noise.

Can you upload a video of the noise for me to hear?

Hi Roy, thank you for the prompt response. To answer your first query. Yes, if the car is stationary and I swing the steering wheel to left or right I get a noise in both positions. Regarding your 2nd query I will attempt to record the noises the next time I am out. i just hope with my basic computer skills that I can upload them for you. We will certainly try. As indicated in my first communique none of the noises are apparent when starting from cold but as the engine warms up, they become apparent. Hope this helps.

Okay, I would check for any play in the front wheels with the car jacked up.

Start there and feel for any play.
