C055C- Steering Gear Performance Slip Detected

The power steering control module continuously verifies the mechanical friction of the steering gear. If the friction is too high the clutch between motor and rack slips and the internal angle is no longer valid.

If the mechanical friction in the steering system is too high, the steering gear must be checked, and all rubber boots and seals inspected. Check for signs of water intrusion into the steering gear. If water has gotten inside, high friction is likely to occur again.

The usual repair is to replace the steering gear. You can try and reuse the old steering motor.
If a new motor is to be installed together with the steering gear, then the new motor needs to be programmed using SPS programming, a factory tool.

Thanks for the info. This sounds pretty involved. How difficult is this to do? Do you recommend an experienced mechanic does this or can a first timer tackle this at home?

The job is not that involved but would require some decent hand tools and lifting equipment.
I would suggest leaving it to an experienced technician if you are unsure.
