Hi, the car has been sitting in my back yard for months now with no battery. I got the battery and when I go ahead and try to start it up, it turns on just like 2 seconds then shuts off then "steering wheel column defective" appears on the instrument cluster". Where is the locking mechanism located or how do I approach this? Thank you.

I would agree with what you are thinking that this is the locking mechanism. That is the common cause of the message you are getting.

I attached the process on how to replace it and program it. I have not experienced any other cause of this issue so if it were me, I would go ahead and replace it.

Let me know if you have questions. Thanks
