My steering column was disconnected for a project. Now I cannot get it to reconnect so that I can get it back on the road. It is disconnected at the knuckle on the rod doesn't seem to be broken just wont fully connect. When turning the wheel slightly to test if in right spot there is slight tension then it gives way and moves freely a few minutes before there is tension again.

Hi,

I attached a pic of the column and circled two things. Tell me if you are having trouble at the one I indicated as number 1 or number 2.

If you are talking about number 1, either something isn't properly aligned or the joint is bad. They can bind as you described.

Let me know.

That is the upper steering shaft. You may have to remove the clock spring to get this. I think you have to recenter the clock spring. That is what is stopping you from it going together.

Removal and Installation
1. Depower the supplemental restraint system (SRS). For additional information, refer to Air Bag Systems.
Turn the steering wheel to the straight-ahead position and remove the ignition key.

2. CAUTION: Do not allow the steering wheel to rotate while the steering column intermediate shaft is disconnected or damage to the clockspring can result. If there is evidence the intermediate shaft has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and recentered. For additional information, refer to Air Bag Systems.

Remove and discard the upper intermediate shaft-to-steering column bolt and disconnect the shaft.
To install, tighten to 48 Nm (35 ft. Lbs.).
