Starts but wont hold revs

Hiya, I am having some issues with my mk 1 golf. She started coughing yesterday then whilst driving the revs died. She didn't stall but when I got power back she backfired and popped a flame (this has never happened before.) I went to start her later on in the evening and she starts every time but wont hold revs, instantly dies and does not respond to any throttle etc. I'm completely stumped. Do
Recently I have fitted an uprated walbro fuel pump could it have something to do with that?

So you found the problem?

You need to check "Control Pressure" and "System Pressure".

No this is a new problem since I fitted the new pump. Its been running fine for about a week.

By check system and control do you mean a compression test?
