Hello, so you're getting a cranking but not starting intermittently. Have you had the vehicle scanned for any trouble codes yet? AutoZone or any local auto parts stores should be able to scan the vehicles engine computer for free, write down and code numbers they find. It might be that you have a bad crank position sensor or something along those lines.
You can also check to see if you're missing spark at one of the ignition coils, a bad crankshaft position sensor will cause that as well. No spark or fuel injector pulse. But have it scanned first and see if there are any trouble codes stored in the computer.
Was this issue happening before she ran out of gas?
The only way to really know if it's something to do with the fuel system would be to check fuel pressure while the fault was occurring.
If the vehicle has a Tachometer, you can watch for it jumping slightly when it won't start.
Here is the information on the Crankshaft position sensor if you want to check the connector and wiring to it, it's a 3-wire sensor, with a 5volt Ref feed, a Ground and a signal wire, it's located on the passenger side rear of the engine block.
