I have read many of your post on this issue but I'm not of the proper way to test for spark. Also when it comes to the distributor how can I help you understand what style I have? I can tell you that I do not have points.

A little more detail in my problem - I got on it to drive it home from getting the taxes done and it was tough to start but it finally did. I was on my way home and all of a sudden I lost all power for about 5 seconds and then it came back. When I got home and turned it off it would not start back up. When turning the key it would always turn over but not start. A few times it acted like it wanted to start when I started to turn the key back to off, but it will not even do that now.

Also I have read many OHM's reading the coil should be like between 10 & 12. I have taken mine off and it reads good between + & - at 1.4 but the when putting the + cable to the center and the - to - I'm getting 8.5. I bought a new coil but it only reads 7.8. Not even sure if I have the correct coil even though it looks like the one I took off just a little taller.

I was thinking it may even be the ignition module. So I was going to take it off to have its tested tomorrow at our local parts house. If it's bad what name brand do you recommend I buy?

By the way thanks for responding tonight, I need all the help I can get.

LONG AS YOU RETURN TO THE POST, I'LL HANG WITH YOU!

I'M USUALLY HERE FROM ABOUT 6:30 PM OR SO TO ABOUT 11:00 PM EASTERN TIME. HITHER AND YON ON THE WEEKENDS! ALL BALANCED ON WHATEVER THE WIFEY THROWS ON ME.

SPARK TEST

AT THE PRESENT (TILL YOU LEARN ABOUT A REMOTE STARTER SWITCH) YOU NEED A HELPER!

PULL A LONGER SPARK PLUG WIRE OFF OF A SPARK PLUG (LEAVE IT ON THE DISTRIBUTOR CAP)

STICK A NAIL INSIDE THE BOOT (WHERE THE PLUG GOES IN) SITUATE THE NAIL IN BETWEEN THE METAL PART AND THE RUBBER BOOT.

NOW YOU HAVE CONTACT WITH THE CLIP IN THE BOOT, AND THE NAIL WON'T FALL OUT

NOW LET'S HOLD THE NAIL ABOUT 1/8 TO 3/16 AWAY/ NEXT TO A BOLT OR CLEAN METAL (ANYTHING THAT IS A GOOD GROUND)

THAT IS, HOLD THE WIRE OR USE INSULATED PLIERS TO HOLD THE WIRE IF YOU'RE CONCERNED.

HAVE YOUR PAL CRANK THE ENGINE WHILE YOU HOLD THAT NAIL/ GROUND GAP

DO YOU SEE THE SPARK JUMPING FROM THE NAIL TO THE GROUND? DOING THIS IN THE SHADE WORKS BEST!

THANKS FOR THE ADDITIONAL INFO

ARE YOU SURE YOU HAVE FUEL? MAYBE THE GAUGE/ SENDER IS OFF?

SEND REALLY GOOD PICS OF YOUR DISTRIBUTOR/ BOTH SIDES OF THE ENGINE AND A GOOD TOP VIEW (HOOD LAID ON THE WINDSHIELD FRAME)

MY DISTRIBUTOR IS A MOTORCRAFT WHICH WAS INTRODUCED IN 1979 (MY JEEP CJ-5 IS A '77, I UPGRADED FROM A CRAPPY PRESTOLITE TO THE BETTER MOTORCRAFT)
PICTURE OF THE MOTORCRAFT BELOW (DON'T FRET, YOUR PLUG WIRE SEQUENCE MAY START AT A DIFFERENT TOWER, SO DON'T START MOVING THEM!- MY DISTRIBUTOR IS DROPPED IN "TEXTBOOK")

LET ME KNOW OF ANY OTHER MODIFICATIONS YOU MAY HAVE

HOW LONG HAVE YOU AND YOUR JEEP BEEN FRIENDS?

Thanks again for getting back to me. I went out to replace my coil and dropped one of the bolts. I guess it went to never never land because I could not find it. Finally found a replacement bolt and finished bolting the coil to the block. I also plugged the two connectors coming off the ignition module back together because I was going to remove it to have it tested. I sat down in the jeep to turn it over and nothing, just clicking. So now it will not even turn over. Not sure what I've done to make it not turn over because all I did was the two things I mentioned above, but I replaced them back exactly the way I removed them.

By the way my coil looks identical to yours even with the horseshoe connector on top.

I'll take and send some photos tomorrow afternoon of the distributor and engine bay. 4:30am comes early for me so I'm going to call quits for tonight.

Thanks again and I hope to hear from you tomorrow. I'm adding one of my photo's of her. Not a flames guy, but this is how she was painted when I bought her about 2 and half years ago. I'm also adding the 77 Camaro I bought my son for Christmas. He's just turned 14 so he has a year or so before he can get his license to drive her. Well maybe not, can't resize them I'll have to figure some other way to get my pictures to you.

Thanks, I put it on trickel charge this morning.

I wanted to ask a few questions on buying Ford parts. When buying the solenoid with the 4 post I was told to ask for the Ford version. Do I do the same with the ignition module, coil, ect?

I'm trying again to send pics, if you do not get them drop me an email with your email address and I'll send them that way.

Thanks again!

Medieval, I got home and took it off of trickle charge and sprayed starter fluid in the carb and it started and ran as long as I had my throttle pressed. As soon as I let off it shut off.

Here are a few pics of the engine bay, distributor and carb. If you need a few more let me know.

GOT IN LATE AS CRAP!

SEND PICS OF L & R SIDES OF ENGINE (FULL FRONT OF ENGINE TO THE REAR)

NOTICED YOU HAVE A WEBER CARB (AFTERMARKET)

I'VE HAD ISSUES WITH DIFFERENT BRANDS OF IGNITION MODULE - TO ME, ANY "GOOD" ONE IS ACCEPTABLE. FROM PAST EXPERIENCES OF TEARING MY HAIR OUT AFTER REPLACING A BAD MODULE WITH A "NEW" BAD MODULE LOOKING/ TEARING THRU MY WIRES FOR THE "NO START" PROBLEM FOR DAYS, THEN REALIZING IT WAS THE "NEW ONE"

I ALWAYS HAVE 'EM TEST THE NEW ONE ***** AT LEAST 5- 8 TIMES*****BEFORE I LEAVE THE STORE!

LET'S NOT BUY NUTHIN' AT ALL TILL I SHOW YOU A BUYING TRICK NEXT RESPONSE

SOLENOID AIN'T NO BIG DEAL- STORE BRANDS ARE FINE, YES, THE CORRECT ONE IS THE SAME AS FOR A '70s-EARLY '80s FORD

SOUNDING LIKE YOU HAVE A CARB OR VACUUM PROBLEM

BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR A LOOSE/ DISCONNECTED/ SPLIT/ CRACKED/ COMPLETELY LOOSE VACUUM LINE OR FITTING. SEE IF THE CARB ANCHOR BOLTS ARE LOOSE.

WE'LL GET YOU TUNED UP TOO, AFTER WE GET THE HEARTBEAT BACK

ALSO, WHAT PART OF THE COUNTRY ARE YOU IN?

I did check to see if any vacuum lines were disconnected and didn't find any. I will have to check this afternoon to see if any are loose, split or cracked. I'll also check the carb anchor bolts.

I'm in a little town by the name of Cope SC. It's in between Bamberg and Orangeburg.

If these pics still do not let you see everything you need, let me know what part you do need to see and I'll snap a pic of it. For some reason my cell will not let me resize a photo without cutting most of it off.

HOMEBOY!

STATIONED IN SAVANNAH, HUNTER ARMY AIRFIELD DURING THE '80s (AIRBORNE RANGER)

JUMPED ONTO AND FLEW FLEW INTO NORTH FIELD MANY TIMES (ACCIDENTALLY LEFT THERE IN THE WOODS ONE NIGHT W/ ANOTHER FELLER WHEN THE SGT IN CHARGE OF THE PLANE'S PASSENGERS HAD A BRAIN FART. HE GOT CHEWED GOOD WHEN WE WERE UNACCOUNTED FOR!

WHEN I WAS A KID MY DAD WAS LOOKING FOR LOST RELATIVES IN CEMETERIES AS A HOBBY, WE WENT DOWN YOUR WAY TO A "SOMETHING" SWAMP CHURCH GRAVEYARD. THE CHURCH WAS ACROSS THE STREET AND HAD A DOME ON TOP. YOUR TOWN WAS CLOSE AND HAD OLD HOUSES AND BUILDINGS SITUATED AROUND THE RAILROAD. (ALSO SEEN WHEN I WAS IN THE ARMY)

I HAD PROBLEMS POSTING LAST TIME, I LOST IT ALL TWICE, I DID MENTION IN THOSE THAT THE CAR IS NICE (EVEN THOUGH I LIKE JEEPS MORE BETTER!) AND THE JEEP IS NICER!

I'M ABOUT 100 MILES NORTH WEST OF YOU

I'M GONNA PUT YOUR PICS IN "MY PICS" SO I CAN BLOW 'EM UP BIGGER TO LOOK 'EM OVER

DID YOU PUT THE CARB ON IT?

HAVE YOU LOOSENED/ MOVED/ OR TAKEN THE DISTRIBUTOR OUT?

IF YOU HAVE A TACH (GREAT!) IF NOT, ANY GUESS ON HOW FAST YOU MUST MAINTAIN ENGINE SPEED TO KEEP IT FROM DYING?

WILL IT REV UP OR DOWN WITH THE PEDAL?

LAST TIME IT HAD A FUEL FILTER?

WHEN IT RUNS, IS IT SMOOTH OR MISSING ETC?

SEE THIS/ LEARN HOW TO MAXIMIZE YOUR SAVINGS/ A124 AND TRT41 RECENTLY WORKED (STILL!!!) DO DRY RUNS TO SEE WHAT WORKS AND WHAT DON'T, LOOK FOR CODES YOURSELF, YOU MAY DO BETTER THAN ME!

Cool !

Thanks! I love the jeeps and old Camaro's. My son must take after me because he like the old ones as well.

Yes those North boys fly the big carriers so low at times it seems like they are right on top on the house.

It's sad but I have not done anything to it but buy a soft top for it. It was in such great shape when I bought her there was nothing needed. The only thing I have had to change was the distributor ignition pickup but that was about a year and a half ago.

I will say that I changed the battery cables, ground to the firewall and the solenoid tonight, but still no start.

I checked for cracks, loose and tears on the vacuum lines but did not find any. I also checked the bolts in the base of the carb but they were tight.

One thing I didn't mention yesterday is it also started twice without using ether. Then I couldn't get it to start either way.

I haven't moved or taken the distributor out. I did remove the cap to make sure it didn't have any cracks and to make sure the button was okay and it looked fine.

I do have a tach but sorry to say I didn't pay any attention to it. If I can get it started again I will take a look.

It will rev up and I didn't hear any missing or sluggish sounds.

I haven't changed the gas filter so it's not a bad idea to pick one up. What size & namebrand would you recommend?

Take a look at the pic below and let me know if you think this fuse can be tested and what it may be for. It's plugged in the harness that lays against the firewall right behind the carb.

BATTERY CABLES

POSITIVE TO THE SOLENOID

*****NEGATIVE TO ENGINE (SIDE OF BLOCK OR HEAD)*****!

ANY OTHER WAY MIGHT SET A WIRE HARNESS ON FIRE! AS THE STARTER WILL FIND A GROUND IF THE "BIG ONE" IS OUT OF ORDER AND DOESN'T CARE WHAT SIZE THE WIRE IS. WITH THE BATTERY CABLE GROUNDED ON THE ENGINE, THAT IS THE MOST DIRECT ROUTE TO THE STARTER.

USUALLY THE DRIVER'S SIDE HAS A CABLE OR WOVEN STRAP JUMPING OVER THE MOTOR MOUNT (THIS WOULD GROUND THE BLOCK TO THE FRAME)

NORMALLY A WIRE JUMPS FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TO THE BODY (FROM THE BATTERY CLAMP OR THE CABLE TO THE BODY)

THE "BOSCH" THINGEE LOOKS LIKE RELAY- DOES IT HAVE 4 OR SO PRONGS ON THE BACK? IT MAY BE FOR FOG LIGHTS/ ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP ETC.

DO YOU HAVE A MECHANICAL (STOCK) FUEL PUMP OR A ADD ON ELECTRICAL?

BELOW IS A "STOCK" CJ SOLENOID
