Hard starting

All at once motor was hard to crank over. I thought starter was dragging. Changed starter and battery is good. It will start sometimes but is a real drag on battery. Once it starts it runs fine. Any suggestions?

Good morning.

Did you load test the battery?

It could be a voltage drop from the cables as well. Make sure the connections are clean and tight.

With side mount battery cables, remove the bolt from the cable and look at the inner portion. That is the area that gets corroded.

Even tried a new battery and checked and cleaned connections. It does not crank long before sucking the life out of the battery. Wondering if something is going to ground but shouldn't that blow a fuse somewhere That is why I changed the starter. Thought the bushings were out of the starter and the winding's were dragging.

If that is the case, I suspect you either have a bad battery of the engine is tight to turn for some reason.

I took the battery to a shop and had it load tested. Even tried a new battery. I am beginning to think that the starting may be binding. The old starter did not have shims so I installed the new one without shims. Think I may try shimming the starter and see what happens.
