Lost my key, it has a chip. A locksmith replaced it which involved playing with a computerized element in the ignition/starter system. A few days later my starter motor fried. Replaced it and within twenty four hours the new starter motor fried too. Could the chip in the new key be activating the starter motor when the car is running and destroying the starter motor? My mechanic is baffled.

I believe it is the ignition switch that is causing the problem and not the chip. The chip only enables the starter to be cranked but the ignition switch has to be in the cranking position before the starter circuit is activated.
