I have had my starter replaced twice still having issues. The vehicle in question is a c1500 truck. Originally the starter was making noise. I had it changed. And at the point it was still slightly louder than normal. But it was bearable. Then about 4 months later. It went out again. The next mechanic put on another one, then told me I needed to change the flywheel. He changed the flywheel which had no broken teeth or break cracks or bends anywhere. After putting the new flywheel and new starter in. It starter but again loud grinding noise start. 2 days after that. It wont start at all! There is 3 shims on the ground underneath my truck. And now the mechanic has a attitude. He says its ding that now because it is missing the starter mounting bracket. I mean you would think he noticed the missing bracket. Before he removed originally? Anyway to make matters worse the dealer is telling me that the vehicle does not even come with a rear starter bracket. Supposedly this part number 23502557 is the GM 1988-1999 starter bracket. But when I look up that part it says not compatible to my vehicle. I don't know what to do. Here is my VIN number: 2GCEC19H5P1160529. Help! Ray

Good afternoon,

This is an alignment issue between the starter gear and the flywheel.

There is information on it. I posted it below.

Your did not come with the bracket. The shims are very important and also torquing of the bolts as well.

There is a updated starter drive available just for the grinding. The part number is below in the article.

A clashing or grinding condition, may exist, due to improper engagement of the starter to flexplate on some vehicles equipped with 5.0L/V8-305 & 5.7L/V8-350 engines with automatic transmission. To correct this condition, replace the starter drive assembly, with new drive assembly, part No. 10456422, which utilizes a stiffer jump spring allowing for proper engagement. During starter drive assembly replacement, all ring gear teeth should be inspected. If three or more consecutive teeth are damaged, the flexplate should be replaced with flexplate No. 10128414.
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove starter braces or heat shields, if equipped.
3. Disconnect starter solenoid electrical connectors.
4. Raise and support vehicle.
5. Remove attaching bolts, nuts and washers from starter motor.
6. Remove starter motor from engine.
7. Reverse procedure to install.
