Hi,
If you have everything disconnected, that certainly can cause the engine to stall. As far as the starter, if you are starting it while only one bolt is loosely installed, be careful. It can break the starter or where it's mounted. There is a lot of torque on it when cranking the engine.
I attached the directions below for the removal and replacement of the starter. I'm adding them just in case. Also, they provide the torque specifications.
