When I turn the ignition switch, sometimes the solenoid clicks one time, and then nothing works, lights, dash lights, etc. I have a new Optima battery and new battery cable. I have check the volts/ground from the battery to the bus block/junction box on the firewall and on the fusible links. I have also check two of the red wires where the wiring web enters the firewall next to the steering column. I am getting good voltage up to that point. I'm not sure where to go from here: ignition switch? What would cause so much draw?

Hi,

Based on your description, it sounds like a poor connection. The starter motor puts a very heavy load on the electrical system. If there is a poor connection, this is what can happen.

Here is a link that explains the problem and how a battery connection can cause it:

I realize a new battery terminal was installed but reconfirm everything is tight and clean. Confirm the ground cable is in good condition and has a good solid clean connection on the engine block.

Let me know.

Thank you so much for your advice. Evidently, the last time I tried to start the truck finished off the negative battery cable. Previously, I was getting 12.5 volts when I grounded to the stud for the negative cable. When I got back to it and checked it again, I only had .40. I cleaned everything up, and nothing changed. Picked up a new cable, and it is running great!
Thanks again for your help.

Hi,

Thanks for the update. I'm glad you were able to resolve the issue. You would be surprised how often that happens. LOL

Regardless, take care and feel free to come back anytime in the future.
