Starter not working properly Starter acted like it had a flat spot?

Starter acted like it had a flat spot. Engine 454. Replaced starter noting position of wiring. Check wiring position and tightness. Turned key ignition light came on but starter won’t respond. Had the new starter checked at auto parts store check okay.
Am at a loss what to do now.

Hi,

First, see if it starts in neutral. If it doesn't, I attached a pic below. There is a smaller purple wire running to the starter. That is the trigger wire. It only gets power when the key is in the start position. Have a helper turn the key to start and see if there is power to that wire.
