I do not have any codes on the CEL. I jumped the correct pins and no codes to retrieve. My problem/question is that, can a bad IAC valve be bad with no codes? I am also familiar with the ignition coils cracking. My car will start and run but not idle good recently. I have to crack the throttle to keep it running which makes me believe it is an IAC problem, but I have owned a lot of these cars and never really had one go bad. The funny additional things which make me suspect other things like the coil is that the car will shut off even after about a minute holding the throttle steadily cracked open. Also while having it running at 2,500 rpm with a steady foot on the pedal I turn on the headlights and it disrupts the rpm enough to make it shut off as if someone turned the key off. Unlike sputter out like a fuel starving problem. Thanks in advance.

Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros.com.

Based on your description (the headlights causing the engine to stall), leads me to believe there is a ground issue. As far as the IAC, it only maintains engine idle speed and does nothing once you open the throttle, so I do not think it is that component.

First, check to make sure the battery terminals are clean and tight. I would suggest removing them, cleaning them and then reinstalling them.

Here is a link that shows how to clean them:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/everything-goes-dead-when-engine-is-cranked

Next, check the condition of the ground cable from the battery. Note that the main lead goes to the engine block. Confirm that it is in good condition, where it attaches is clean (not corroded), and the bolt is tight. If the cable is questionable, I would recommend replacing it. They are inexpensive. Additionally, often times there are smaller ground wires which come off the main one. They attach to the body of the vehicle. Same thing with them. Make sure they are in good condition, clean and tight.

I have attached a picture which indicates ground points under the hood of the vehicle. Inspect them and let me know what you find.

Hope this helps,
Joe

Okay, thanks. I own a total of three of these four cylinder 2.2 L Camry's and when first started up in the morning they idle high and then return down to a normal idle perfectly as they should. However, this Camry does not. It starts then just goes to an idle rpm even when engine is first started up that morning and is ambient temperature. Also, I did check the ground cable and battery terminal connections. All of them looked pretty good but the area where the negative cable is bolted to the engine had a little corrosion that I cleaned up but I do not think it was a factor because it corroded slightly where the metal was not contacting each other. Anyway, I double checked the fuel pump and it is brand new and making good pressure constantly as I was worried about the connection of the fuel pump wiring at the pump's connector. I have ruled out the pump not working. I have ran the car multiple times and now I cannot get the car to shut off out when headlights and high beams are turned on. I believe that is not happening anymore so possibly just a little cable clean up might have worked. I did change the battery terminals to more nicer ones. My question now is, why the idle speed will not go high at first the step itself down like normal? Still I have no codes displayed. I am thinking my idle air control valve is not working properly as the rpm does not appear to be functioning like my other 2.2 L Camry's that I have.

It sounds like the IAC valve is gummed up not adjusting the idle speed. Here is a guide to help you service the unit and the location in your car below:

Check out the diagrams (below). Please let us know what happens.

Cheers, Ken
