Hi,
If the belt was wet, it could have caused the noise. However, WD40 is a lubricant. It will allow the belt to slip more easily.
The belt tension is controlled via an automatic belt tensioner. Is the belt tight? If it is and the belt is wet with oil (WD 40), it will likely need to be replaced. If you replace it, before installing the new one, make sure to check the belt pulleys with something like brake cleaner.
