Engine spits, sputters, and tries to shut off?

After I start it in the morning it idles rough and after I go a mile or so and come to a stop, it spits, sputters, and tries to shut off. It only does it after it's been sitting all night. If it's warm out it hasn't done it. After the car warms up in the morning it stops doing it most of the time.

Hi,

It could be related to a failing temperature sending unit. If the sensor indicates an inaccurate temperature cold, it will cause the air/fuel ratio to be off.

When this happens, have you ever noticed a strong exhaust smell or seen dark gray or black smoke from the exhaust?

Let me know that. Also, I need to know the correct engine size to look into things. These only came with a 4 cylinder. See pic below.

Let me know what you have and if there are any diagnostic trouble codes set.
