Spilled oil

I added oil to my car forgot to place the cap back on. Needless to say oil all over the engine block. Lots of smoke the first day I had it but now I am backfiring and losing acceleration after it happens. Everything goes back to normal after ten to twenty seconds. If you can please let me know if it is just air working itself out or what?

Nothing to do with air. When this happens, the check engine light should come on. Scan the computer to identify what trouble codes are present. Here is how:
